I feed the little birds here every day, and a couple of times a week I put leftover bread, meat, or pasta out for the crows. I love their sleek black bodies, and they are such smart birds. On this particular day, I'd made chicken stock and put the leftover meat out for them. Once I got back inside and unbundled (it was really cold and very windy, hence the ruffled feathers), I glanced out and saw some white amongst all the black.

I assumed it was seagulls, but when I got to the window I saw this beautiful pair of Bald Eagles. They have a nest nearby, and I've seen one or the other occasionally in the trees or flying overhead, but this was the first time I'd seen them together. I almost broke my neck running upstairs to get my camera, but they obliged and stayed for a few minutes, snacking with the crows and posing. I'd never seen them on the ground before, and it's a trip to watch them walk - it looks like there's a person inside this bird costume, lumbering about. When they fly you can see that their wing span is 6 -7 feet. Awe inspiring!

I stopped putting food out for a couple of weeks so they wouldn't get into the habit of coming around because you aren't supposed to feed them. Bald Eagles are monogamous and mate for life. A Bald Eagle will only select another mate if its companion should die. So, I thought, a good image for "We'll fly throught the Falls and Summers with love on our wings."
